    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image alignment method useful in document authentication by image comparison.
      SOLUTION: Barcode stamps, which act as alignment marks, are added near the corners of the page of an original document image. The original document image including the barcode stamps is printed and circulated, while the original document image is stored in a database. To authenticate a printed document, the printed document is scanned into a target document image, the target document image is compared with the stored original document image. The barcode stamps are used as alignment marks to perform a global image alignment. Next, the target image and the original image are divided into multiple sub-images, and local image alignment is performed on the respective sub-images before performing an image comparison. Differential sub-images are generated from a pair of sub-images, and merged into a global differential image for the purpose of detecting any interpolation in the printed document.
