    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a recording medium writable in a high density and with a high sensitivity and readable and reproducible many times without the destruction of recording by incorporating a photoacid generating agent and a fluorescent pH indicator into a part to be recorded and further, incorporating a sensitizer at need therein. SOLUTION: The photoacid generating agent is preferably at least one kind selected from among an onium salt, organic halogen compound, nitrobenzyl ester and sulfonate of polyvalent phenol. If the photoacid generating agent does not have absorption in a visible part or if the absorption is small, the sensitizer having the absorption in the visible part is combined. The fluorescent pH indicator emits fluorescence by the photoexcitation of the wavelength longer than the wavelength of the absorption peak of the sensitizer. Namely, the destruction of the recording does not occur even if the recording and reproducing of many times are executed even in the case of the fluorescent indicator having the absorption on the wavelength side longer than the wavelength of the sensitizer and not having photoreactivity.

    • PURPOSE:To control the reflection or transmission intensity of light with photoirradiation at a high speed by combining a photochromic compd. thin film or a high-polymer thin film dispersed with the photochromic compd. and a prism. CONSTITUTION:This optical switching element consists of the photochromic compd. thin film or the high-polymer thin film dispersed with the photochromic compd. and the prism. Incident light I0 enters the prism where the light is partly transmitted and guided at the boundary with the thin film and is partly reflected at the intensity I. The light is made incident at the angle at which the reflection intensity is min. if the photochromic compd. is an isomer A. The refractive index of the thin film changes, the transmission and waveguide intensity decreases and the reflection intensity increases if the isomer B is formed by the photochromic reaction effected by irradiation with the control light P1. The optimum transmission and waveguide conditions are satisfied again and the reflected light intensity decreases if the isomer B is returned to A by changing the wavelength of the control light to P2. Then, the optical switching phenomenon is eventually exhibited by alternately casting the control light rays P1, P2 to this element.
