    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for a grip by switching the relative data between the driving torque and the gripping force according to the gripping speed when the set value of the holding force is in a low gripping force region or in a high gripping force region in the chuck of a machine tool opened or closed by a drive motor. SOLUTION: When a work is to be gripped by a chuck 15, an upper shaft 2 is positioned and stopped at a prescribed angular position by the main shaft index instruction from an NC device. A securing pin 45 is inserted into a positioning hole 41, and a piston 112 is driven by the pressurized air fed through the center of the securing pin 45 to release the engagement between clutch teeth 116, 117. The main shaft 2 is rotated by a main shaft motor 4, a scroll 96 is rotated via a gear reduction mechanism to open or close gripping pawls 30. The gripping speed is switched according to the set value of the gripping force, and a plurality of relative data indicating the relation between the gripping force and the driving torque of the drive motor are switched according to the gripping speed to control the gripping force.

The clamp and unclamp mechanisms 21 and 32 at least in three sets clamp the pallet 9 against the table 1 during clamping operation, the pallet 9 is brought into an unclamping state during unclamping operation, and the pellet under surface is forcibly pushed up to separate the end face on the pallet under surface side from the end face on the table upper surface side.
