    • PURPOSE: To improve a contact type end face seal for high load by providing a first seal ring with a sealing face extending almost radially, and a second seal ring axially movable with respect to a retaining member into which one of the rings is inserted. CONSTITUTION: A seal structure 10 sealing between a fixed housing 12 with a hole part 14 and a relative rotating shaft 16 inserted through the hole part 14, is a mechanical end face seal comprising a first seal ring 40 with a sealing face 44 extending almost radially and a second seal ring 140 with a sealing face 144 facing in mating relation with the sealing face 44 of the first seal ring 40. The axially movable seal ring 40 is formed in shape and dimensions to obtain seal balancing of at least 0.80, and the radial dimension of annular parts 46, 48 is less than about half of the radial width of the axially movable ring. The radial width dimension of the sealing face of the axially movable ring is to be 1/8 inch or less.

    • PURPOSE: To suppress leakage of sealing fluid by providing a dam part extending inwardly from a circumference of one seal face, and an annular groove part formed between first and second circumferential edges. CONSTITUTION: When a ring having entrance lands 58 is rotated, circumferential edges 60, 62 act as a skimmer on the fluid on the high pressure side of a seal in response to the rotation direction of a shaft to drive or dip out the fluid inwardly within the seal face. When the fluid enters between the seal faces 40, an angle is formed by either of side edges 52, 54 of a land 46 in response to the rotation direction of the shaft. As a result, since the traveling direction of the land 46 is generated, the fluid is continued to be dipped out diametrically inwardly from the circumferential area of the respective following lands 46, and finally the fluid collides with a dam part 42, and a striking pressure zone is then maintained in the neighborhood of the dam part 42 adjacent to a groove part 44. Thus, leakage of the sealing fluid can be suppressed.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a noncontact seal capable of substantially minimizing the wear of its seal ring, that possibly occurs only at the start or stop of rotation of its shaft. SOLUTION: A noncontact mechanical end face seal comprises a main seal ring having a rear section 50, a sealing surface section and a middle section 56 between a sealing surface 30 and the rear section 50. On the assumption that the ring sections have radii defined as the differences between their outside radii and their inside radii, the rear section should preferably have 1.5 to 3.1 times as long radii as the middle section, more preferably 1.9 to 2.5 times as long, and most preferably 2.0 to 2.3 times as long. Another seal ring 18 is formed with a groove that extends from one side thereof to the other until it opens onto a dam at a radius Rg, and preferably with a boundary in the groove. The dam should have a radius Rg slightly larger or smaller by within 10% than the outside radius of the middle section.

    • PURPOSE: To provide a high-temp. resisting secondary seal made of non- elastomer material for use in a gas turbine by installing a high-temp. carbon graphite secondary seal ring of split type which is to be biased in the axial direction by a first biasing means and in the radial direction by a second biasing means. CONSTITUTION: A holding device is formed from a primary ring 30, holder 40, secondary seal rings 60 and 70, and a biasing means consisting of a disc 54 and spring 52, and the secondary seal rings 60 and 70 and the primary ring 30 are biased by the spring 52 via the disc 54 in the axial direction and the seal face 32 of the primary ring 30 is biased toward the surface 12 of a fit ring 10. The holder 40 has a contour portion 42 on that side of the holding device facing the periphery of the primary ring 30, and circular springs 62 and 82 are installed in the connection part 46 of the holder, so that the secondary seal rings 60 and 70 are biased in the radial direction. The whole surfaces of the secondary seal rings 60 and 70 are coated with a dry lubricant.

    • PURPOSE: To improve forming performance of fluid gap by forming a specified groove zone near a circumference of a seal surface of a first seal ring, directing a plurality of grooves to a specified direction, elastically driving a seal surface of the first seal ring, and engaging it with a seal surface of a second seal ring in a sealed manner. CONSTITUTION: An annular groove surface 14 is formed on a seal surface 12 of a seal ring 10, adjacently to a peripheral edge 18 of an outer diameter circle. A groove 20 is partitioned by a land 22 in the vicinity of the peripheral edge 18 of the groove surface 14 with an even spacing. The groove 20 is provided with a first groove boundary 21 extending in circumferencial and diametral directions, and a second sawtooth boundary 23. A plurality of terminal corners are formed on one of the boundaries 21, 23. The boundaries 23 are connected to each other by a series of second edges 28 extended in circumferencial and diametral directions. Under the rotation in the direction of an arrow, a front boundary of the boundary 21 is provided. Pressure at the terminal corners 24 is reduced due to pressure distribution in the seal surface groove 20.

A seal 10 applied to the housing 12 comprises inboard and outboard seal modules 22, 24 having respective pairs of primary rings 28, 38 and respective pairs of mating rings 32, 42 placed therein. The primary rings 28, 38 are held on the housing 12 respectively by inboard and outboard retainers 58, 60. The mating rings 32, 42 are supported on the shaft 16 via inboard and outboard shaft sleeves 46, 50, a spacer sleeve 54, an O-ring 55 and the like. Thus, sealing action is assured by use of the centrifugal forces of rotating rings.

    • PURPOSE: To keep liquid tightness against disalignment of a shaft and a housing providing an aligning seal lip which is in contact with a base of a main seal lip adjacent to a housing chamber containing pressurizing liquid, and an axial seal deflected to environmental contaminant on an outer side of the housing chamber, which serve as an annular elastic element and a rigid annular retainer united to each other. CONSTITUTION: An annular ring 34 which is adhered to a wall surface 60 of a retainer 32 is arranged on a seal main body 30. A main body part 38 is radially extended from the ring 34 inwardly in a radial direction. A conical main lip 44, an aligning lip 46, and an anti-driving lip 48 are extended from the main body part 38. The main lip 44 is connected to the main body part 38 by means of an annular base 50. The aligning lip 46 is conically formed between the main lip 44 and the anti-driving lip 48, so as to be inclined to the axially driving side in a radially inward direction. A cylindrical outer surface 49, a cylindrical inner surface 52, and an annular front 47 are formed. Axial centers of the shaft and an inner hollow space are so provided that the outer surface 49 is in contact with the inner surface 51 of the base 50, while the inner surface 52 is in contact with the shaft at the time of aligning. In attachment the seal, deflection to the outer side of the housing alignes the main lip with a rotary shaft.
