In a second mode, the residual consonants not displayed in the first mode are displayed. One of the keys functions as a mode switching key. When the consonant to be inputted in the character input is not displayed in the first mode, the mode switching key is operated to enter the second mode. When the consonant is inputted in the second mode, the mode is changed to the first mode in response to the input.
