    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of objectively determining reflection characteristics of a surface and of converting the reflection characteristics to parameters which can be utilized for a downstream side system so that the characteristics are available in a form of data codes.SOLUTION: The topology of an original pressure-engraved surface is scanned by using a three-dimensional scanning method to determine topological data of the surface, and the topological data substantially including depth values belonging to each surface element of a raster scanning the original pressure-engraved surface is stored in a first data record. The first data record is subjected to edge detection, and then average calculation is performed by referring to the depth values to assess the depth values relative to influence of the depth values to reflection characteristics. Then, a value describing a frequency and/or height of the edge obtained by the average calculation is assigned to each surface element as a reflection value and stored in a second data record, thereby the second data record becoming available for a further machining system or testing system.
