    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for identifying an unknown material to be equal to a material matched thereto by performing matching of the unknown material with each of a number of known materials. SOLUTION: In the method for identifying an unknown product, the absorbance spectrum of the unknown product to be identified is measured and an unknown product score vector is determined from the unknown product spectrum projecting in principal component inside model space of clusters. It is determined whether or not the unknown product score vector falls within one of the envelopes and if so the product score vector is projected into the principal component inside model space of that cluster, and it is determined whether or not the unknown product score vector falls within any of the subclusters divided from the cluster. This process is repeated until the unknown product score vector is found to lie in a cluster which is not further subdivided. In this manner, the search is narrowed to a few products.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument for measuring near-infrared transmission spectra of phermaceutical tablets in which entrance of stray radiation, reaching a photodetector, is minimized or is excluded. SOLUTION: This instrument is equipped with a beam transmission means for transmitting a near-infrared light beam of narrow bandwidth through a phermaceutical tablet, a photodetection means for detecting light transmitted through the tablet, a tablet locator located so as to pass over the light beam, the tablet locator comprising a main body having an upper surface and a lower surface, the upper surface having a stepped well, the stepped well having a first section and a second section centered on the first section, the second section having an exit portal smaller than tablet, wherein the second section receives a tablet, the exit portal having a diameter less than the diameter of the tablet and allowing passing of the light beam passing through the tablet from the lower surface through the second section, and a masking means received in the first section, the masking means having a center opening which provides an optical path for the light beam emitted from the beam transmission means for transmission through the tablet within a boundary inside the boundary of the upper surface of the tablet.
