    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flare apparatus for discharging and burning flare gas in the atmosphere. SOLUTION: The flare tip 56 includes a flare gas conduit 100 having a flare gas discharge opening and a combustion air conduit 102 having a combustion air discharge opening. All of the flare gas to be flared is discharged through the flare gas discharge opening into a unified column of air discharged through the combustion air discharge opening. The flare gas discharge opening and the combustion air discharge opening are positioned with respect to one another such that flare gas discharged from the flare gas discharge opening is discharged inwardly into combustion air that is discharged from the combustion air discharge opening and admixed therewith. Essentially all of the discharged flare gas is admixed with discharged combustion air or external atmospheric air outside of the flare apparatus 50 thereby preventing internal burning.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a burner assembly performing combustion while suppressing formation of nitrogen oxide.
      SOLUTION: A burner assembly 10 includes a burner tile, and the burner tile includes a burner throat 48 disposed therethrough. Combustion air is conducted through the burner throat into a combustion zone in a furnace. A pilot assembly is used to generate a pilot flame within the burner throat. Fuel gas is injected into an ignition zone 80 located outside the burner throat and ignited therein. The pilot flame 62 generated in the burner throat 48 is used to ignite the fuel gas in the ignition zone 80. The ignited fuel gas is admixed with combustion air in the combustion zone 58. The burner assembly 10 is operated without mixing a significant amount of fuel gas with combustion air in the burner throat 48, which controls the formation of undesirable nitrogen oxides.

In another embodiment, if it is determined that steam is necessary, a maximum allowable flow rate of steam is calculated, and the flow rate of steam is modulated to achieve smokeless operation and avoid a flow rate of steam in excess of the maximum allowable flow rate of steam. A flare assembly 10 is also provided.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flare burner that is particularly suitable for use in connection with ground flares and other types of flares in which it is important to control the height of the flame envelope. SOLUTION: The flare burner includes a pre-mix zone including a pre-mix chamber into which air is entrained. A uniform mixture of fuel and air is formed in the pre-mix zone and caused to exit an air/fuel outlet in the top of the pre-mix chamber. In one embodiment, the amount of air in the fuel/air mixture that exits the air/fuel outlet is in excess of the stoichiometric amount of air required to support combustion of the fuel in the mixture. Fuel is injected around the perimeter of the air/fuel outlet, combustion is initiated and a flame envelope is created. By injecting a mixture of fuel and air that includes excess air into the center of the flame envelope, combustion of the central portion of the flame envelope is accelerated which allows more fuel to be flared with a given flame envelope height. SOLUTION: A flare tip unit comprises an inner member and an outer member defining an annulus therebetween. The annulus defines an annular gas passage through which combustible gas passes. The combustible gas and an air/steam mixture mixes in a premix zone between the inner member outlet and the exit opening of the outer member.
