摘要： PURPOSE:To improve the radiant ray resistance of an optical fiber by radiating in advance ultraviolet rays to the optical fiber to be exposed to a radiant ray atmosphere, and decreasing the optical loss increase quantity of the optical fiber, which follows up the radiant ray irradiation. CONSTITUTION:gamma rays are radiated into a shielded space which has been shielded from the external field. A radiant ray source 4 is provided, and optical fibers 3 which have been bundled by providing an intermediate part so as to be opposed to gamma rays outputted therefrom are contained. Subsequently, one end of the fiber 3 is drawn out of the shielded space 5, a light beam from a light source 1 is made incident on this end face through a lens 2, and to the other end which has been drawn out, a photodetector 6 is connected. In such a way, by radiating in advance ultraviolet rays before using the optical fiber, and decreasing the optical loss increase quantity, the radiation resistance is improved.

摘要： PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled glass fiber provided with a clad layer having uniform ellipticity by providing a pair of grooves to the outermost layer of a preform in the positions symmetrical with the center thereof and melting and drawing the preform under heating. CONSTITUTION:This preform 1 for a constant polarization single mode optical transmission fiber consists of a core 5 disposed concentrically, a clad layer 4 having the m.p. lower than the m.p. of said core, and the outermost layer 3 having the m.p. higher than the m.p. of said layer. A pair of grooves 2 are provided to the outermost layer of such preform in the positions symmetrical with the center of the preform 1 in the longitudinal direction of the preform 1. The outermost layer 3 melted in a manner as to fill the grooves 2 flows and at the same time the clad layer 4 of a low viscosity having the m.p. lower than the m.p. of the outermost layer 3 and existing around the core 5 is formed to an elliptical shape in section if such preform 1 is heated and drawn. The titled glass fiber which obviates the degeneration of the two polarization modes possessed by light and permit stable transmission of information is thus easily obtd.

摘要： PURPOSE:To remarkably increase the light absorbing performance of a quartz group optical fiber as compared to other wavelength areas by doping a rare earth element on a core or the peripheral edge part of the core. CONSTITUTION:A rare earth element is doped on the core or the peripheral edge part of the core and a clad 1 having a refractive index smaller than that of the core is applied to the periphery of the core. The clad 1 is obtained by sending glad forming gas into a quartz glass tube 2 and heating the external surface of the pipe 2. Glass forming gas, oxygen and dopant source gas 3 for reducing the refractive index smaller than the core are contained in the clad forming gas. The core is formed by doping the rare earth element with 0.01-1mm thickness on the clad 1 formed on the inner surface of the quartz glass pipe 2. Consequently, the light absorbing performance is remarkably increased as compared to other wavelength areas, so that the optical fiber can be used as a sensor sensitive to light.

摘要： PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain optical secondary harmonic waves of sufficiently high intensity without requiring an optical resonator by condensing the light emitted from a light emitting means by an optical system, introducing this light into a KLN fiber and guiding the light in the KLN fiber held by a KLN fiber holding means. CONSTITUTION:The light of the linear polarization type emitted from a light source 1 is introduced through a polarization plane rotating device 2 and a condenser lens system 3 into the KLN fiber 4 from its one end face. Since the short side of the KLN fiber 4 is set at a prescribed length, the light introduced therein is propagated by the confining effect of the KLN fiber 4 with substantially no attenuation. The KLN fiber 4 does not have clad layers at all and is directly held by the KLN fiber holder 7. The refractive index of the KLN fiber holder is set lower than the refractive index of the KLN fiber 4. The light emitted from the KLN fiber 4 is introduced to the optical filter 6, out of which only the secondary harmonic wave are taken.

摘要： PURPOSE:To provide the entirely novel KLN crystal fiber which is adequate for optical secondary harmonic generation by having a core layer and clad layer which are respectively specific. CONSTITUTION:This KLN crystal fiber is composed of the core 1 consisting of the KLN (potassium lithium niobate) and having a square section and the clad layer 2 covering the outer periphery of the core layer 1. The core layer 1 is formed by using a growth device which is provided with a melt drawing out port in the bottom of a growth cell of a resistance heating type and is inserted with a melt feeder in this melt drawing out port, by which the KLN crystal having an optically homogeneous tetragonal crystal is obtd. The clad layer 2 is formed of a low-loss optical material having the refractive index lower than the refractive index of the KLN crystal. The process for production of the clad layer 2 is exemplified by coating, extruding, CVD methods, etc. The light from a light source is kept held in nearly a condensing state over the range of the entire length if this optical fiber is used as a fiber for optical second harmonic generation. Since the interaction length is made sufficiently long, the high optical second harmonic generation efficiency is obtd.
