    • PURPOSE:To enlarge a driving voltage margin by providing a period for applying voltage zero or a voltage the same in polarity as a write voltage, immediately before applying the write voltage to be applied to a picture element on a selected scanning electrode. CONSTITUTION:Between a scanning electrode group and an information electrode group which are being intersected, an optical modulating substance is provided, and in accordance with the electric field direction of a voltage applied to an intersection part which are used as a picture element, the contrast is identified. Immediately before applying a write voltage to be applied to the picture element on the selected scanning electrode, a period for applying voltage zero or a voltage the same in polarity as the write voltage is provided. For instance, by providing a prescribed pausing period T between an opposite polarity pre-pulse Vb and a write pulse Vw, the influence of the opposite polarity pre-pulse Vb at the time of writing can be reduced. In such a way, a normal display can be executed, and a driving voltage margin can be enlarged.

    • PURPOSE:To maintain bistability by applying a switching pulse signal below a DC voltage in such a direction that an internal electric field produced in a liquid crystal layer owing to the maldistribution of an ion material is canceled. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal element which has spontaneous polarization originating from a molecule dipole and uses bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal allows ion species in the liquid crystal to migrate in with the internal electric field established by the spontaneous polarization. When an electric field E is applied to the element, liquid crystal molecules 3 are oriented in the 1st orientation state 5, but this state is stable even after the electric field is ceased. Further, when an electric field E' in the opposite direction is applied, the liquid crystal molecules 3 are oriented in the 2nd orientation state 5' and change in direction, and are held in the state even after the electric field is ceased. Those orientation states are maintained on condition that the electric field E does not exceeds a constant threshold value. Consequently, the bistability of the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is maintained.

CONSTITUTION:This a liquid crystal element of cell structure having the ferroelectric liquid crystal between a couple of substrates provided with electrodes and oriented films and the ferroelectric liquid crystal has a single stable state induced on an oriented film interface in the absence of an impressed electric field. Then, when a DC electric field (downward) is impressed on the liquid crystal element which is in a stable molecule orientation state in one direction so that the polarization direction of liquid crystal molecules becomes stable in the opposite direction, a bistable state can be realized artificially. Namely, the DC electric field in this opposite direction is impressed while the liquid crystal element is driven to generate a state where an electric field more than a certain value is impressed at any time, thereby obtaining the stable bistable state regardless of the phase structure of the liquid crystal, components of the oriented films, a combination of orientation processing methods, etc.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element which can attain two stable orientation states even while an electric field is not impressed thereto by subjecting both substrate surfaces to the same surface treatment to realize through bistability. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element is constituted by forming transparent electrodes on the surfaces of the substrates then forming protective layers over the entire part of the substrates and forming further plural spacers on the protective layers. Two sheets of the substrates of which both surfaces in contact with a ferroelectric liquid crystal are subjected to the same surface treatment are used. The liquid crystal element is formed of two sheets of the substrates subjected to exactly the same surface treatment and the liquid crystal layer is made vertically symmetrical, by which the approximately through bistability of the liquid crystal is realized.
