According to the invention, the capillary slit electrode has conduits enabling the separate flow of reaction gas and electrolyte/permeate in the electrode. The electrode is preferably hydrophilic in a narrow internal region for mounting on a separator, while elsewhere it is hydrophobic. Thus electrolyte/permeate penetrates only into the region of the capillary slit electrode near the separator, while the region away from the separator remains free of electrolyte/permeate, so facilitating the unimpeded flow of the reaction gas. The invention is applicable especially in electrolytic cells for chlor-alkali or hydrogen electrolysis, and in the construction of cells for the generation of power.

    • PURPOSE:To facilitate the diffusion of produced gaseous hydrogen and to efficiently and stably obtain electrolytic hydrogen with low voltage and electrolytic power by arranging a porous conductive electrode between the catalytic electrode and diaphragm of the filter press-type electrolytic bath for producing hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:The porous conductive electrode 2 supported by a spacer 6 is firmly held to the diaphragm 3 on the anode chamber side of the diaphragm, 3. Meanwhile, the porous conductive electrode 5 is supported by a spacer 6b and firmly held to the diaphragm 3 with the catalytic electrode 4 carrying platinum, etc., is between one the cathode chamber side. The assembly is clamped by the end plates 1a and 1b acting also as the electrode plate and pressing plate to assemble the electrolytic bath. An electrolyte is supplied to the anode and cathode chambers to cause electrolysis, and gaseous hydrogen is generated from the cathode chamber. In this filter press-type hydrogen producing electrolytic bath, a porous conductive electrode 11 is arranged between the catalytic electrode 4 and the diaphragm 3. The diaphragm 3 is preferably formed with an ion-exchange membrane and the electrode 11 with carbon fiber or especially with carbon fiber felt. Consequently, the diffusion of generated gaseous hydrogen is facilitated between the electrode 4 and diaphragm 3, the discharge of hydrogen is promoted, and electrolysis efficiency is improved.
