    • PURPOSE: To prepare glycerol in high yield, economically and advantageously in one stage without passing through glycidol, by reacting alcohol with an organic hydroperoxide and water catalytically in the peresence of a vanadium compound.
      CONSTITUTION: Allyl alcohol is brought into contact with an organic hydroperoxide, e.g. tert-butyl hydroperoxide or cumene hydroperoxide, and water in the presence of a vanadium compound, e.g. vanadyl sulfate of vanadium pentoxide, to prepare glycerol. The amount of the organic hydroperoxide is used usually equimolar or less based on the allyl alcohol, and the complete consumption thereof provides the safe operation of a plant. The molar amount of the water is preferably 2W10 times that of the allyl alcohol. Preferably, the reaction temperature is 50W 200°C, and the pressure is ordinary one or about several atm.
