    • PURPOSE:To enhance stage effects of an indirect lighting system by providing, around a halogen bulb, a reflector having a liquid crystal dimming element on a side of the reflecting surface thereof, and changing over ON-or OFF- operation of a voltage with respect to the liquid crystal dimming element of the reflector by the use of a switch. CONSTITUTION:An indirect lighting system 10 is provided with a halogen bulb 12 as a light source inside a cup-like casing 11. The halogen bulb 12 is turned on or off by a switch 13. The lighting system 10 is further provided around the halogen bulb with a reflector 1 constituted of a liquid crystal dimming element on a side of the reflecting surface thereof, where a switch 14 changes over ON-or OFF-operation of a voltage with respect to the liquid crystal dimming element of the reflector 1. If a voltage is not applied to the element, light incident into the reflector 1 is remarkably diffused by the translucent element 2 and reflected light becomes diffusing reflected light. Meanwhile, if a voltage is applied to the element, light incident into the reflector 1 permeates the element 2 which is transparent so as to be reflected by a base plate 7, where the light is approximately regularly reflected owing to high reflectivity of the base plate 7.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent a color from being left at the time of decoloring by forming electrodes on both surfaces of a specific smectic liquid crystal film, and making at least one of the opposite electrodes transparent. CONSTITUTION:The electrodes 11 are formed on both surfaces of the smectic liquid crystal film consisting of dichroic pigment made of side chain type high molecular liquid crystal wherein a mesogen group is coupled with the side chain of the skeleton chain of a polymer and a low-molecular nematic liquid crystal and at least one of the opposite electrodes 1 is made transparent. This composite liquid film 2 is smectic liquid crystal in a constant temperature range. When an electric field of low frequency is applied, the light transmissivity becomes considerably lower than that before the electric field is applied and the opaqueness increases, but when an electric field of high frequency is applied, the film increases in light transmissivity to come to transparent, and the transparency varies continuously with the frequency of the applied electric field, so that the previous transparency is maintained when the application of electric field is turned off. Consequently, no color is left at the time of decoloring.

    • PURPOSE:To allow the writing, displaying, preserving, erasing, and changing of information on characters, graphics, etc., and to prevent the splashing of powder at the time of writing and erasing by inserting a film consisting of a specific material between a lower electrode and a surface transparent electrode. CONSTITUTION:The film of such material which is reversibly changed in the transparent state and the opaque state according to the various levels of the frequencies of impressed electric fields and maintains the transparent or opaque state before the removal in spite of the removal of the impressed electric fields is inserted between the lower electrode 2 and the surface transparent electrode 1 constituted by packing transparent conductors 1b into the many through-holes bored in a transparent insulating film 1a. The transparent insulating film 1a is exemplified by, for example, films, etc., of polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, etc. The transparent conductors 1b are exemplified by conductive high-polymer compds., etc., such as polypyrrole and polythiophene. The writing, displaying, preserving, erasing, and changing of the information on the characters, graphics, etc., are freely executed in this way without splashing the powder.

    • PURPOSE:To produce the high-performance light guide at a low cost by previously forming a resin layer of a low refractive index to serve as a clad to core forming parts, subjecting a thermoplastic sheet to thermal press forming to form grooves for cores, the inside surfaces of which are enclosed by the resin layer of the low refractive indexz, and embedding a resin of a high refractive index to serve as cores into the grooves for cores. CONSTITUTION:The resin layer 2 of the low refractive index to serve as the clads is formed on the surface of the thermoplastic sheet 1. The thermoplastic sheet 1 constitutes the substrate (base material) to support the cores 6 to be formed afterward. The thermoplastic sheet 1 (composite sheet 11) is then subjected to hot press forming. The press hot press forming is executed by using metallic molds 3, 4 heated to the softening temp. of the resin of the thermoplastic sheet 1 to form the grooves 5, the inside surfaces of which are enclosed by the clad layers 2. The cores 6 are formed in the formed grooves 5 for cores. The example, a liquid curing type high refractive index resin is cast into the grooves 5 and is cured. The high-performance light guide is produced in this way at a low cost.
