    • PURPOSE:To enable easy and accuracy measurement even in the unstable web state on a card, by delaying the voltage or current value of a measuring device to superpose the same to the original measured value and detecting the difference between both values to measure the irregularity of web or a nep. CONSTITUTION:The light reflected from a web or nep is converted to electricity to be measured as a measured value wherein voltage or current is varied and the nep appears in a sharp pulse like form 6 and the web appears in a gentle wave form 7. When there is brightness irregularity at the place of the web, for example, wave forms appear as shown by the numerals 8, 9 in the drawing. This original output and the measured value of output obtained by delaying the original output by minute quantity are superposed and, when the difference between the voltage or current values of both of them is detected, the values at areas, where the web at a bright area gently varies, are canceled with each other and comes to small values and the sharp area of the nep is left as it is and the pulse 6 and the wave form 8 come to the same value and detection becomes easy and measurement can be accurately performed.

    • PURPOSE:To permit easy joining by inserting low-melting glass into a tube having the inside diameter approximate to the outside diameter of an optical fiber to a prescribed extent then inserting the optical fibers to be joined into said tube and heating the tube to melt the low-melting glass. CONSTITUTION:A prescribed amt. of low-melting glass is inserted into a tube 5 having the inside diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of optical fibers 3 and 4 and thereafter the fibers 3 and 4 to be joined are inserted into the tube 5 from both ends. The tube 5 is formed of an org. or inorg. material, metal, alloy or the composite thereof. The low-melting glass is formed by adding a m.p. decreasing agent such as lead oxide, lithium oxide, etc. to borosilicate glass of low expansion consisting essentially of silicon oxide, boron oxide, sodium oxide, aluminium oxide, etc. The low-melting glass is melted by a suitable heat source from the outside of the tube 5. The connecting operation is made easy without deterioration in properties and deformation of the optical fibers and without decrease in the passing characteristic of light.
