SOLUTION: The process for producing the liquid crystal element having the liquid crystal injecting stage for sticking the heated liquid crystal compsn. to the liquid crystal injection port of a liquid crystal cell in an environment of an atm. pressure or below and injecting this liquid crystal compsn. into the display region of the liquid crystal cell is provided with the mixing treatment stage for uniformly mixing plural liquid crystalline compds. constituting the liquid crystal compsn. and a deaerating treatment stage for removing the gases intruded into the liquid crystal compsn. by heating the uniformly mixed liquid crystal compsn. and, further, resting the compsn. in the environment of the atm. pressure or below as the stages before the liquid crystal injecting stage. The resting of the liquid crystal compsn. under the atm. pressure or below after heating the liquid crystal comps. to what deg.C in this deaerating treatment stage is determined by taking the properties of the liquid crystalline compds., the viscosity at the temp. near the transition temp. to the isotropic liquid phase of the liquid crystal compsn., etc., into consideration.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having V-shape response characteristics and excellent gradation by using a liquid crystal device having V-shape response characteristics and a specified temperature range where a smectic-A phase and a smectic phase having V-shape response characteristics are present as mixed. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device contains a chiral smectic liquid crystal and has V-shape response characteristics. The chiral smectic liquid crystal consists of a liquid crystal composition containing at least two kinds of liquid crystal compounds having a smectic phase showing V-shape response characteristics in the lower temperature side of the smectic-A phase. The temperature range where the smectic-A phase and the smectic phase having V-shape response characteristics are present as mixed is specified to within 3.0 deg.C. As for the liquid crystal compound having the smectic-A phase and the smectic phase having V-shape response characteristics, a compound expressed by -COOC*HR1-R2 is preferably used. In the formula, R1 is CH3 or CF3 and R2 is a 1 to 20C alkyl group which may have substituents.
