    • NEW MATERIAL:The cyano compound of formula I (n is 1 of 0). USE:Photosensitive layer for electrophotography. A photosensitive material for electrophotograpy having excellent characteristics such as charging capability, charge-keeping capability, and rapid discharging property with light, etc., and especially a material acquiring positive charge, can be prepared by applying a photosensitive layer containing the photoconductive cyano compound to the electrically conductive substrate. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by (1) refluxing benzonitrile and acetonitrile in ethyl ether in the presence of sodium to obtain 3-phenyl-3-imino-propionitrile of formula II, (2) condensing the compound with malononitrile in ethyl alcohol under refluxing, and (3) condensing the resultant 4,4-dicyano-3-phenyl-allyl nitrile with terephthaladehyde or glyoxal in an organic solvent (e.g. ethyl alcohol).
