SOLUTION: This belt retractor is provided with a frame 10, a belt spool 18 having a pair of flanges 20, 22 and attached rotatably inside the frame 10, and the locking mechanism for locking the belt spool 18 selectively. A gear member 24 provided with an external gear is attached onto the one flange 22 of the spool 18. A locking claw 30 is shifted by a spring engaged with the gear member 24. The claw 30 is held by a solenoid 34 to be brought into a non-engaged condition from the gear member 24 during a normal operation condition of the belt retractor.

The energizing force imparting means 40 is accommodated in the second reel 30 to impart rotation energizing force in a direction of winding the webbing W against the rotation of the second reel 30. At this time, the rotating speed ratio between the first reel 20 and the second reel 30 is made different to reduce the pull-out force of the webbing W according to the pull-out quantity of the webbing W.

When the reel 4 rotates a set rotation amount, the rotation amount memory 24 rotates a stopper 22 around a support pin in the same direction via a protruding pin. When a locking base abutting end is in a position capable of abutting to a locking pawl and the reel 4 relatively rotates further, the locking base abutting end abuts to the locking pawl and a rotation of the stopper 22 is blocked. Furthermore, a relative rotation occurs between the reel 4 and the stopper 22 due a rotation of only the reel 4 in the same direction, a reel abutting end abuts to an end of a recessed part, and the reel 4 and the locking base 15 are rotatively coupled.
