    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe capable of highly accurately working a workpiece. SOLUTION: The lathe 1 includes a bed 10, a column 11 raised on the bed 10, a main spindle having its axial line horizontal and parallel to a front face of the column 11 and holding one of ends of the workpiece, a headstock provided on the front face of the column 11 for rotatably supporting the main spindle around the axial line, and first and second tool rest 20 and 25 movably provided on the front face of the column 11 in the direction of the main spindle axial line and the direction orthogonal to the mentioned direction for holding a tool T. The column 11 is formed to be vertically symmetric with respect to a symmetrical surface M with at least its outline horizontal of a vertical section perpendicular to the main spindle axial line. The headstock is provided on the front face of the column 11 so that the main spindle axial line is included in the symmetrical surface M. The first tool rest 20 and the second tool rest 25 are respectively provided on the front face of the column 11 so that their positions are vertically symmetric with respect to the surface M.       SOLUTION: The cylinder reconditioning apparatus 1 comprises a first spindle 12 and a second spindle 17, a main shaft rotary drive mechanism for rotating the first spindle 12, a blade table 22 for holding a cutting tool and a grinding tool, a tool rotary drive mechanism for rotating the cutting tool, and an engraving device 30 having an engraving needle 31, in which a cylinder S is supported with centers 14, 19 fitted to the first spindle 12 and the second main shaft 17 respectively. The cylinder reconditioning apparatus 1 is also provided with a feed mechanism for moving the blade table 22 in the axial direction or in the radial direction of the cylinder S and for moving the engraving device 30 at least in the radial direction of the cylinder S. Grinding work can be performed after cutting work having a high removing ability, thus enabling effective reconditioning of the cylinder S.
