    • PURPOSE:To obtain the unit having no defect in external appearance by coating optical fiber element wires with ultraviolet-ray setting type resin in a fused state as a protection layer individually in advance and forming them into one tape through a die, and irradiating the resin with ultraviolet rays and setting the resin. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber element wires 3 formed by providing optical fibers 1 with coating layers 2 made of ultraviolet-ray setting type resin are supplied from bobbins 10, 10... and arrayed in parallel on the same plane through a guide roll 11 at sufficient intervals; and a resin coating jig 17 is used to coat each fiber element wire 3 sufficiently and previously with ultraviolet-ray setting resin which is supplied in a fused state from a material supply tank 12. Then, excessive resin is removed by the die 13 to form all wires in one body to specific size, and the resin in the fused state is irradiated with ultraviolet rays from an ultraviolet lamp 14 and set to form the protection layer 4, and resulting tape- shaped unit is drawn by a drawing machine 15 and taken up by a take-up machine 16.

    • PURPOSE:To form a uniform coating layer having low transmission loss, by applying a gas stream flowing along the running direction of the optical fiber to the circumference of the uncured coating layer in the coating of an optical fiber with a layer of an ultraviolet-curing resin. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber 12 is coated with an ultraviolet-curing resin by the coating means 16 in the coating apparatus 10. The uncured coating layer 14 on the optical fiber 12 is irradiated with ultraviolet radiation by the ultraviolet radiation means 18 to obtain the cured coating layer 14'. In the above process, a vessel 22 is inserted between the coating means 16 and the ultraviolet radiation means 18, and a gas stream 20 flowing along the running direction of the optical fiber is formed around the optical fiber 12. The speed of the gas stream is made higher than the running speed of the optical fiber 12, and the gas is cooled beforehand. Since the uncured coating layer 14 is shielded from the high-temperature of the ultraviolet radiation means 18 by the gas stream 20, the fluidity increase of the uncured coating material can be prevented, the formed coating layer 14' can be uniformized, and the residual strain can be lowered.
