    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell which has a high mechanical strength capable of enduring dimension change of the electrolyte membrane due to humidity change and has a superior durability, and to provide the polymer electrolyte fuel cell. SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly for the polymer electrolyte fuel cell 1 has an anode electrode layer 12 provided on one of surface of the proton conductive composite membrane 11 and a cathode electrode layer 13 provided on the other surface. The proton conductive membrane 11 includes a reinforcement sheet having a plurality of through-holes which are provided at the section other than the end in surface direction and penetrate in the thickness direction and an electrolyte membrane which is provided at the surface of the section provided with the plurality of through-holes and at the inner surface of the plurality of through-holes. At least one of the end out of the end in surface direction of the anode electrode layer 12 and the end in surface direction of the cathode electrode layer 13 is arranged on the outside in surface direction than the section where the plurality of through-holes are provided.
