    • PURPOSE:To obtain a device having a wide visual field angle and high opening rate by adopting a structure in which electrodes for driving liquid crystals are held by >=2 layers of upper and lower dielectric layers exclusive of the liquid crystal layer for the electrodes for driving liquid crystals and specifying the specific resistance of the liquid crystals to a specific range. CONSTITUTION:The wire-shaped electrodes l, 3, 4 are formed on the inner side of a pair of transparent substrates and orientation control films 5 are applied thereon and are subjected to an orientation treatment. A liquid crystal compsn. is clamped between a pair of the substrates. The bar-shaped liquid crystal molecules 6 are so oriented as to have some angle with the longitudinal direction of the striped electrodes 1, 3, 4 at the time of non-impression of an electric field. Changing of light transmittance by impression of the electric field 9 is made possible by arranging polarizing plates 8 at a prescribed angle 11. The structure in which the electrodes for driving liquid crystals are held by >=2 layers of the upper and lower dielectric layers exclusive of the liquid crystal layer is adopted for the electrodes for driving the liquid crystals. The specific resistance of the liquid crystals is specified to to >=1X10 OMEGA.cm. The opening rate is increased by specifying the specific resistance of the liquid crystals to OMEGA.cm such a manner.

Bar-shaped liquid crystal molecules 5 are so oriented as to have an angle of 45 to 90 deg. to the longitudinal direction of striped source electrodes 3 at the time of not impressing electric fields. The liquid crystal molecules 5 change their directions to be in the electric field direction when the electric field 7 is impressed. Changing of the light transmittance by electric field impression is made possible by arranging polarizing plates 2 at the transmission axes 8 of the polarizing plates.

    • PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display device which has high contrast and excellent visual field characteristics at low cost without transparent electrodes by placing the device in operation while the long-axis direction of liquid crystal molecules of a liquid crystal composition material is held almost in parallel to a substrate surface according to electric field intensity based upon the potential difference between pixel electrodes and signal wirings. CONSTITUTION:Linear electrodes 201 and 2092 are formed inside a couple of transparent substrates 203, orientation control films 203 are formed thereupon by coating and oriented, and the liquid crystal composition is sandwiched between them. Rod type liquid crystal molecules 205 are oriented having slight angles to the length direction of the striped electrodes 201 and 202. Then when an electric field 207 is applied, the liquid crystal molecules 205 change their directions to the electric field direction. The polarized light transmission axis of a polarizing plate 206 is arranged at a specific angle 209, and then the light transmittance can be changed by voltage application. In display mode, the long axes of the liquid crystal molecules 205 are always nearly parallel to the substrates 203 and never rise, and then no visual angle dependency is obtained, thereby improving the visual angle characteristics.

Then, the active matrix driving system liquid crystal element 1 functions as an image forming element, and the 2nd and the 3rd liquid crystal elements 2A and 2B are provided with a function for selectively transmitting the three primary colors of light by the combination of the on/off thereof as an optical switch element, so that the images corresponding to the three primary colors of the light are successively displayed by synchronously driving both of the elements 2A and 2B to realize color display. Thus, middle-definition liquid crystal display is made high-definition. Furthermore, by adding this optical system to a monochrome display, color display is attained.
