    • PURPOSE: The direct esterification between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol forms oligomers, which is decomposed with an excess amount of EG, then the polycondensation reaction is effected, thus producing polyester with high transparency and polymerization degree.
      CONSTITUTION: To bishydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET) oligomers resulting from the direct esterification of terephthalic acid (TPA) with EG are continuously added a slurry of EG/TPA at a molar ratio of less than 1.2/1.0 and they are heated. The newly formed BHET is separated and transferred to the polycondensation tank and EG is added so that EG/TPA molar ratio becomes 1.2W2.0. Thus, polyester with a diethylene glycol content of less than 2% and high polymerization degree is obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a producing method of photographic substrate, by which the oligomers are hardly generated at the time of forming the substrate film and the film having a low foreign matter content can be produced and further, the reduction in transparency of the film can be prevented from occurring by melt-extruding a polymer obtained through subjecting a polyester prepolymer to heat treatment at a specified temp., into a sheetlike form and then uniaxially stretching the sheet. CONSTITUTION:This substrate is produced by subjecting a polyester prepolymer to heat treatment in a gaseous nitrogen stream or under vacuum, at a temp. which satisfys the formula I, so that the intrinsic viscosities of both prepolymer and resulting polymer after the heat treatment satisfy the formula II, thereafter melting and extruding the resulting polymer into a sheetlike form and then uniaxially stretching the sheet. In the formulas I and II: Tb is the boiling point ( deg.C) under atmospheric pressure of the major glycol component of the polyester prepolymer; T is the heat treatment temp. ( deg.C); Tm is the melting point ( deg.C) of the polyester prepolymer; IV0 is the intrinsic viscosity of the polyester prepolymer; and IV is the intrinsic viscosity of the resulting polymer after the heat treatment of the polyester prepolymer.
