Then moving the gear 33a to the upper and a point end part 6a of a lifter 6 to the upper, a sheet of the cassette C is lifted by the lifter 6. CONSTITUTION:When a paper S is set to cassettes 9a, 9b, or a manual handler 38, and a both-side copying or a multicopying is designated, the paper S is input and sensors 40 and 41 detect the size of the paper S to input the result to a controller. Images are copied to the paper S at a copying unit 2 from a drum 10, and carried 17 and fixed 25. When the detected size of the paper S is the minimum size or larger to allow the both-side copying or multicopying, a gate 29 is rotated to the dotted line, the paper S is delivered again to the copying unit 2 through a sheet carrying member 23, and exhausted after copying and fixation. If the size of the paper S is smaller than the specific value, the gate 29 is positioned at the solid line in the figure, and the paper S is exhausted as only one side is copied. Therefore, the generation of a misprinting or a jamming can be prevented.

A slit 20 is opened to irradiate the front end of the original with luminous flux from the lamp 11 and a photosensor 21 detects the level of reflected light corresponding to the size of the original O to decide the size of the original. Then, when a copying operation start signal is inputted, the plunger 26 is turned off, the shutter 22 is returned by an elastic member 25 to its closure position shown by a broken line, and an optical scanning system begins to scan. Thus, the slit 20 is closed when image exposure is started after the original size is detected, and the luminous flux from the lamp 11 illuminates only an exposure position of the original. Consequently, the picture quality is prevented securely from deteriorating.

Then, when a copy button is depressed, the manual insertion type intermediate plate 302 is raised simultaneously with the rotation of a photosensitive drum, and then strikes against the paper feed rolle 25. At this time a torque limiter is energized, and the manual insertion type intermediate plate 302 presses the image transfer member onto the paper feed roller with a predetermined torque. After completion of the copying operation, the manual insertion type intermediate plate 302 is rotated again in the direction A under the urging force of the spring section 305b, and the gap is again formed between the paper feed roller and the manual insertion plate.

Accordingly, when the hand feed tray 29 is displaced to the position facing the feeding roller 25, numbers of sheet materials can be set because the hand feed intermediate plate 302 is normally separated from the feeding roller 25.
