摘要： A method for producing an activated carbon having high strength and high capability for denitration, characterized in that, in a process of producing an activated carbon by the use of coal as a raw material, an activated carbon is subjected to an activation treatment of contacting the activated carbon with an activating gas obtained by adding ammonia to a sintering exhaust gas from steel works; and an activated carbon produced by the method. Ammonia is preferably contained in a concentration 1.1 to 1.5 times that of SO 2 in the sintering exhaust gas. Functional groups are formed on the surface of an activated carbon by the treatment and, while the activated carbon is cycled repeatedly between an absorption tower and a release tower, the denitration percentage is gradually raised up to 90 % and also the percentage of powdering reduces to a level of one half or less of that in the case of a conventional method. The method allows a significant improvement of denitration percentage of from about 40 % in the case of a conventional method to 90 % or more and the operation with little powdering.
