    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner equipped with a relief valve which can stably keep the tension of a chain.
      SOLUTION: A plunger and a spring are incorporated in a cylinder chamber of a housing 1. The relief valve 30 is installed in an oil drain passage 21 which allows a pressure chamber at the rear of the plunger to communicate with the outside. A spherical valve element 36 for opening/closing a valve hole 34 of a valve seat 33 and a spring 37 for pressing the valve element 36 against the valve seat 33 are incorporated in a valve body 31 of the relieve valve 30. The valve seat 33 is press-fitted in an opening end portion of a valve sleeve 32 of the relief valve 30. By setting the diameter of the spherical valve element 36 quite slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the valve sleeve 32, a minute gap is defined between the valve element 36 and the inner periphery of the valve sleeve 32, so that chattering is prevented from occurring at the time of releasing the valve element 36 to thereby stabilize the tension of the chain.
