摘要： PURPOSE:To stably and readily obtain a highly desulfurized town gas with a small amount of a desulfurizing agent for a long period by desulfurizing the town gas without containing hydrogen gas with the specific desulfurizing agent while adding the hydroger to the town gas. CONSTITUTION:Hydrogen in an amount of preferably 1-5% is added to a town gas without containing the hydrogen gas and the town gas is simultaneously desulfurized with a copper-zinc-based desulfurizing agent prepared by a coprecipitation method to desulfurize the town gas. A Cu-Zn-based desulfurizing agent, etc., obtained by mixing an aqueous solution containing a cooper compound and a zinc compound with an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance, forming a precipitate, then washing the precipitate with water, filtering and drying the resultant precipitate, burning the dried precipitate at 270-400 deg.C and further reducing the burned substance with hydrogen is preferred as the desulfurizing agent. The desulfurization is usually carried out by passing the town gas and hydrogen through a desulfurizing tube filled with the desulfurizing agent. Furthermore, the town gas is preferably preheated with a heater, etc., and desulfurized at 250-300 deg.C.

The fuel-air ratio is detected by a lambda sensor of a zirconia type on the front side of a three- component catalyst, for the ratio to enter a window where the three-component catalyst acts, and simultaneously the engine load is detected by a pressure sensor to feedback-control the opening of an air-bypass valve with a fuel-air ratio controller. The metal contents of Pt, Rh, and Ce of the three-component catalyst in a wash layer coated on a honeycomb carrier are controlled to be 2g/l or more, 0.2g/l or more, and 5g/l or more, respectively, based on the apparent volume of the honeycomb carrier.

In this case, the S/C is adjusted to 0.7-2.5 when an Ru-based catalyst is used as the steam reforming catalyst and to 1.5-3.5 when an Ni-based catalyst is used, and then the raw fuel is steam- reformed and converted to a gaseous fuel consisting essentially of hydrogen. Since the raw fuel is highly desulfurized, the deterioration of the catalyst is prevented, a gaseous fuel having a high hydrogen partial pressure is obtained, and the fuel cell is stably operated for a long time.
