SOLUTION: A position detecting device is equipped with a rod 6 borne on a holder in a state to swivel forward, backward and sideways with the upper end as a supporting point. It is equipped with a measuring wire 10 having one end connected to the lower end of the rod 6 in a detachable manner and reaching a winch through a pulley provided to an excavator from the lower end of the rod 6. A position of the excavator is calculated from a tilt angle of the rod 6 and a length let out from the winch of the measuring wire 10 or measured value of a depth measuring instrument provided to a crane suspending the excavator. The rod 6 is fixed to the measuring wire 10 with an anchor 20. By the constitution, the position of the measuring wire 10 detachable to the rod 6 is prevented from being slipped, error of measurement in the tilt angle is reduced, and the position of the excavator can be detected with high degree of accuracy.
