摘要： PURPOSE:To provide the titled display element which gives positive display with high display contrast and is capable of lowering and steepening threshold value, by adding a dichroic dye, an ionic material and a specified optically active material to a host liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:Substrates 1, 2 are apposed to each other at a given distance therebetween. Each of transparent electrodes 3, 4 is provided on an opposing side of each of the substrate. A liquid crystal 5 is enclosed in the space between the both electrodes. Said liquid crystal 5 is obtd. by adding a dichroic dye, an ionic material and further an optically active material of the formula to a host liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy. The opposing surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 are previously subjected to a vertical orientation treatment. Hence, no color is developed when no voltage is applied to the electrodes. When voltage is applied to the electrodes 3, 4, the dipole moment of the liquid crystal molecules is inclined to rotate in the direction of the electrical field, the molecules are revolved by the action of the ionic additive, and the dichroic dye as well as the liquid crystal molecules are brought into a disturbed state. Thus, positive display which has high contrast and is easy to observe from any directions can be obtd. By adding the optically active material, it is possible to steepen threshold value at a low voltage.

摘要： PURPOSE:To decrease the quantity of reflected light and to prevent coloring while voltage is off by forming a reflection film having a roughened surface on the outer side of one of the insulating substrates of a display element wherein liquid crystals are interposed between the transparent insulating substrates formed with oriented films on the inside surfaces. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystals 4 including dyes 5 are interposed between two sheets of insulating substrates 3 formed with oriented films 1 and transparent electrodes 2 on the inside surfaces, whereby a display element is formed. Dichromatic dyes 5 and nematic liquid crystals 4 are used for the element which forms white blanked colorless patterns while voltage is off. Here, a reflection film 6 having a rougened surface is formed on the outer side of one of the insulating substrates which receive incident light I1 and reflect the same as I2 as shown by arrows. The film 6 is roughened by providing many projections or recesses on the surface of a reflection plate 8. The quantity of reflected light of the films 1 is decreased by the film 6 while the voltage is off, despite the change in the orienting conditions of said films; therefore, coloring is obviated and the display images having good contrast are obtained.

Said dichroic dye is contained in an amount of 0.4- 0.9wt%.
