    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device used for monitoring positioning of a measuring instrument, particularly, a balance.
      SOLUTION: This device comprises an inclination sensor 1 based on the principle of a level, which uses a container 10 containing a liquid 11 with one bubble 12 formed therein. The position of the bubble is optically measured by use of a radiation element D1 arranged on one side of the bubble and a sensor element D2 arranged on the other side of the bubble. The radiation element and the sensor element determine a sensor axis sx in the center of which the bubble is located as long as the sensor axis is parallel to the axis of gravity as an integrated unit. Further, the sensor element is put between at least two reference element D3 and D3', and the reference element is used for testing whether the intensity of radiation is within an allowable range or not. In order to confirm that a monitoring device 150 is normally functioning, a function test is automatically executed within the monitoring device.

Variation in electrostatic capacity when the sensor is inclined at an angle theta from its horizontal state is measured by using the relational expression including the electrostatic capacity determined by differential electrodes 10a and 10b and the common electrode 9a, the dielectric constant of the dielectric fluid 13, and the area of the differential electrodes, common electrode, and respective electrodes to calculate the angle theta.
