    • PURPOSE: To make the thickness of a coated resin film uniform by a simple means by spinning a base material for a glass fiber for optical transmission, spray-coating a resin composition on the surface of the resulting optical fiber, heating the coated surface to make the thickness of the resin film uniform, and curing the resin.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 2 melt-spun out of a base material 1 for a glass fiber for optical transmission is introduced into a sprayer 3, where a resin composition such as silicon resin or epoxy resin is spray-coated on the fiber 2, and the fiber 2 is introduced into a heat smoothening device 7. The preferred device 7 has a structure in which heating is carried out with air or an inert gas G heated to 400W1,000°C with an electric heating wire 8 or the like. The surface of the coated resin film on the fiber 2 is heated in the device 7 to reduce the viscosity of the resin and to make the thickness uniform. At the same time, excessive resin is removed by blowing. The fiber 2 is then introduced into a curing furnace 5 to cure the resin and the fiber 2 is coiled around a coiler 6.

    • PURPOSE: The titled apparatus, obtained by providing plural cylindrical containers, having many fine openings on the wall surface thereof, and rotatable at a high speed on a coaxial circle with the center at the passage point of an optical fiber at equal spaces, and capable of applying a uniform coating to the optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: Plural cylindrical containers 2, having many openings of several μmWseveral mm outside diameter on the wall surface thereof, and rotatable at a high speed are provided on a coaxial circle with the center at the passage point of the optical fiber 1 at equal spaces. The cylindrical containers 2 are rotated at a high speed by a motor 5 while feeding a resin composition from a resin feed port 4 into the cylindrical containers 2 in a constant amount, and the resin composition is scattered from fine openings as mistlike fine particles uniformly on the surface of the optical fiber 1 in the circumferential direction by the centrifugal force and made to collide with the surface to form a coating film, which is then cured. Thus, the liquid resin fine particles are made to fly uniformly to the optical fiber 1 from all the directions, and the uniform resin coating film can be formed.

    • PURPOSE: To form a uniform coating film free from thickness deviation, on an optical fiber coated with electrically conductive plastic, by applying particles of a resin composition charged by the application of high DC voltage, and melting and curing the attached resin particles.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of an optical fiber is coated with a coating containing an electrically conductive plastic to form the primary coated fiber 2, which is unwound from the supply bobbin 1. Resin composition particles charged by the application of high DC voltage by the DC generator 6 are sprayed from the sprayer 5 and attached to the surface of the fiber 2. The resin is melted in the curing furnace 4, and further hardened by cooling to obtain the secondary coating fiber 3. The secondary coating 13 having uniform thickness can be formed on the surface of one or several optical fibers 11 having primary coating layer 12. A uniform coating film can be applied even to a fiber having modified cross- section and composed of plural filaments without reguiring precise control for the film thickness and the thickness deviation.

    • PURPOSE:To ensure the viscosity of the neck-down part of a base material for an optical fiber necessary for the strength of the fiber while keeping a heater at a relatively low temp. when the base material is drawn in a furnace filled with an inert gas by preheating the inert gas to be introduced into the furnace. CONSTITUTION:A heating chamber provided with a carbon heater 3 is enclosed with a heat insulating material 4, and an inert gas such as N2 is introduced from an inert gas inlet 5 and discharged from an outlet 6 through the heating chamber. The quantity of heat absorbed from the heater surface is in proportion to the product of the flow rate of the inert gas and the temp. difference between the heater surface and the inert gas. The inert gas is preheated with a preheater 8, so the surface temp. of the heater 3 can be dropped, thereby reducing the consumption of electric power and prolonging the life of the heater.

    • PURPOSE: To uniformly coat the surface of an optical fiber with resin, by placing a separator for separating a flow of resin formed by the passage of the fiber into a downward flow and an upward flow in the vessel of a coating die.
CONSTITUTION: In a method for coating an optical fiber 4 with resin 3 by passing the fiber 4 through a coating die 1 holding the resin 3, a circular separator 5 is placed in the die 1 so that the fiber 4 is passed through the center of the separator 5. The separator 5 has a columnar surface for forming a downward flow of resin 3 at the inside and a circular inclined surface for forming an upward flow of resin 3 between the surface and the side wall of the vessel 2 at the outside. Since the separator 5 separates smoothly a circulating flow of resin 3 in the die 1 into downward and upward flows without causing turbulence, the optical fiber 4 is uniformly coated with the resin 3.

    • PURPOSE: To coat a light transmitting glass fiber with a thin uniform resin layer, by spraying a carrier gas and a resin composition from the respective opening parts of a spray having plural concentric opening parts on the optical glass fiber after the wire drawing passing through the center of the opening part.
CONSTITUTION: Hopper containers 11, 12, 13 and 14 having different sizes are placed on top of each other to give gaps between the respective containers to form plural paths (a), (b) and (c). Thus, a spray 4 having plural concentric opening parts (a'), (b') and (c') is prepared. A base material for an optical fiber is then melt drawn in a wire drawing furnace to give an optical fiber 1, which is then passed through the center of the opening part of the spray 4. A carrier gas and a resin composition are sprayed from the respective opening parts (a'), (b') and (c') on the optical fiber 1. Thus, a uniform pressure is applied to the optical fiber 1 from the circumferential direction, and the resin can be uniformly applied thereto without giving the vibration to the optical fiber 1.
