    • PURPOSE:To obtain the optical recording medium which is strong to the damage and wear of a medium surface and has high performance by forming a recording layer which is changed in state by absorption of light or the temp. rise by the absorption of light on a substrate and allowing the irradiation of light from the front surface side in proximity to the surface of the recording layer. CONSTITUTION:The optical recording medium which is recorded with information by the thermal effect or photon effect of light such as laser beam is constituted as the medium which allows recording by being irradiated not through the substrate formed thereon but from the medium side on the substrate and by bringing an optical head in proximity to the medium surface. Namely, the recording layer which is changed in state by the absorption of light or the temp. rise by the absorption of light is formed on the substrate. A dielectric layer which is hard and is mechanically strong or a protective film of a semiconductor layer is formed on at least the surface of the recording layer formed in such a manner. The problems with the recording medium of a surface recording type are thus solved and the optical recording medium which is strong to the damage and wear of the medium surface and has the high performance is obtd.

    • PURPOSE:To attain an optical recording method with the high recording density, a large S/N and a large rotatory polarization angle, by radiating the light to a thin film containing an optically active organic compound whose rotary polarization degree is varied by heating or with irradiation of light and therefore changing the rotatory polarization degree. CONSTITUTION:A recording layer 2 is produced by coating the polystyrene solution containing the dissolved spiropyrane serving as an optically active organic compound whose rotatory polarization is varied by heating or with irradiation of light onto an optical disk substrate 1 made of polycarbonate and containing a groove by a spin coating process. Then Al is vapor deposited on the layer 2 for formation of a reflecting layer 3. The ultraviolet light is radiated onto the optical disk through the substrate side to obtain a melocyanine type layer 2 so that the rotatory polarization degree is lost. In a recording mode the layer 2 is turned again into the spiropyrane type layer by means of a photomagnetic head and by the laser heating and a pit is formed. The recorded pit is read by the photomagnetic head and by the change of the rotatory polarization degree. Thus, it is possible to attain an optical recording method with the high recording density, a high S/N and a large rotatory polarizing angle.
