    • PURPOSE:To provide the titled display element which gives positive display with high display contrast and is capable of lowering and steepening threshold value, by adding a dichroic dye, an ionic material and an optically active material to a host liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:Glass substrates 1, 2 are opposed to each other at a given distance therebetween. Each of transparent electrodes 3, 4 of, e.g., In2O3 is provided on an opposing side of each of the substrates 1, 2. A liquid crystal 5 is enclosed in a space between the both electrodes. Said liquid crystal 5 is obtd. by adding an optically active material such as a compd. of the formula to a host liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy and further adding a dichroic dye and an ionic material thereto. The opposing surfaces of the substrate 1, 2 are previously subjected to a vertical orientation treatment. Hence, no color is developed when no voltage is applied to the electrodes. When voltage is applied to the electrodes 3, 4, the dipole moment of the liquid crystal molecule is inclined to rotate in the direction of the electrical field, the molecules are revolved by the action of the ionic additive and the dichroic dye as well as the liquid crystal molecules are brought into a disturbed state. Thus, a positive display which has high contrast and is easy to observe from any directions can be obtd. By adding the optically active material, it is possible to steepen threshold value at a low voltage.

    • PURPOSE:To decrease reflected light and to prevent coloring while voltage is off by forming a reflection film via about >=0.3mm. spacing on the outer side of one of the transparent insulating substrates of a liquid crystal display element which forms white blanked colorless patterns while the voltage is off. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystals 4 contg. dyes 5 are interposed between two sheets of transparent insulating substrates 3 formed with oriented films 1 and transparent electrodes 2 on the inside surfaces, whereby a display element is formed. Dichromatic dyes 5 and nematic liquid crystals 4 are used for the element which forms white blanked colorless patterns while voltage is off. here, the element may color slightly according to the conditions formed by the films 1. In such a case, a reflection plate 8 is formed via a transparent film 7 or a spacing 10 of about >=0.3mm. on the outer side of one substrate 3. Then the light incident from the other substrate 3 is reflected to decrease the reflected light. Thus, the coloring while the voltage is off is prevented andthe images having good contrast are formed.

Thus, since the device is not generally seen from a place just above the observation surface, a clear display can be seen.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the reflection of light due to the unevenness of a colored layer and to keep a display bright and easy to see by forming a transparent resin layer on the colored layer fromed on a polarizing plate so as to make the uneven back side of the colored layer even. CONSTITUTION:The transparent resin layer 20 is formed by printing on the back side of a colored layer 15 formed by printing on the back side of a polarizing plate 13. The resin layer 20 makes the uneven back side of the colored layer 15 even, and the back side of the layer 20 is much smoother than that of the layer 15. When the thickness of the resin layer 20 is 3-10mum, the uneven back side of the colored layer 15 can be made even, the layers, 20, 15 transmit well light emitted from a light source 14 for illumination, and a display on a liq. crystal cell 11 can be observed clearly. The quantity of light transmitted is increased by 65-70% by forming the resin layer 20.

    • PURPOSE: To decrease the reflection of light before and behind a color temp. correcting filter layer and to obtain a distinct display by printing directly the color temp. correcting filter layer on a colored layer to be printed on a polarizing plate.
      CONSTITUTION: The colored layer 15 is provided by printing on the rear surface of the polarizing plate 13 and the color temp. correcting filter layer 20 is directly printed on the rear of the layer 15. The layer 20 has the effect of increasing the color temp. of an illuminating light source 14 of, for example, about 2,500°K to ≥3,000°K, more preferably 3,500W5,000°K. The layer 20 is obtd. by adding a coloring agent into a transparent resin such as vinyl chloride resin or vinyl chloride/acryl copolymer resin. The light of light source 14 transmits well the layer 20 and the layer 15 if the layer 15 and the layer 20 are printed to 5W10μm thickness. The distinct observation of the display of a liquid crystal cell 11 is thus made possible.
