    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably and stably prevent PMD from increasing in a finished product due to an external factor.SOLUTION: The optical fiber has an optical fiber element wire in which an optical bare fiber is coated with a resin coating layer. A part of the bare fiber of the optical fiber element wire is given with a first elastic twist, the first elastic twist is maintained by an elastic repulsive force of the coating layer which resists a force in an untwisting direction, and further the entre element wire is given with a second elastic twist different from the first elastic twist. The optical fiber is manufactured in the following manner: in forming the optical fiber element wire by hardening bare fiber pulled out from a heated and melted base material of the optical fiber, coating the bare fiber with a liquid resin, and then curing the resin, before being coated with the resin, the hardened bare fiber is given with the first elastic twist, and a different second elastic twist is given to the entire element wire while the first elastic twist is held by the coating layer.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely and stably suppress the increase in PMD due to an external factor even for a final product.SOLUTION: In an optical fiber wire whose bare fiber is covered with a resin coating layer, the bare fiber is subjected to elastic torsion. The elastic torsion of the bare wire part is maintained by an elastic repulsive force from the coating layer resisting the force in the direction in which the elastic torsion is apt to return. To manufacture the optical fiber wire, an optical fiber base material is heated to melt; an optical bare fiber is extracted; after the extracted bare fiber solidifies, the bare fiber is coated with liquid resin, which is then cured to produce an optical fiber; and finally, the optical fiber is subjected to torsion by a torsion applying device. That is, the torsion is transmitted upstream of the torsion applying device and given to the bare fiber after the bare fiber solidifies and before the bare fiber is coated with the liquid resin, and the bare optical fiber with the elastic torsion given thereto maintains the elastic torsion in the bare fiber owing to the coating layer after the resin that covers the bare fiber is cured.
