    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve paper quality and productivity and reduce chemical cost by stabilizing the dissolved gas amount in white water at low levels to suppress foaming while controlling the amount of a defoaming agent to be added to a minimum required.
      SOLUTION: The amounts of free gas and dissolved gas in a feedstock at the stock inlet 4 or in white water 7 under wires in a save all tray 8 of a papermaking machine 5 are automatically and continuously measured online with a relevant measuring instrument 13, and based on the measurements, a defoaming agent feed pump 15 is subjected to action control by an addition amount control section 16 to make a feedback control of the amount of a defoaming agent to be added, thereby stabilizing the dissolved gas amount in the white water at low levels.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a higher alcohol emulsion defoaming agent which is almost free from the phase separation of an emulsion in a higher alcohol emulsion defoaming agent during its storage and low in possibilities of thickening and gelling and improved in emulsion stability.
      SOLUTION: This higher alcohol emulsion defoaming agent is characterized in that it contains (1) a gelan gum and/or a polysaccharide which is composed of fucose : glucose : glucuronic acid : lamnose in the molar ratio of 1 to 2:1 to 4:1 to 2:1 to 2 as constituent monosaccharides, (2) xanthan gum and (3) at least one kind selected from among a sodium carboxymethylcellulose, a hydroxyethyl cellulose and a hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, and the emulsion stability is modified.
