    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an optical element capable of saving manpower in a forming process while suppressing occurrence of a defective appearance. SOLUTION: At least two glass preforms 110, 120 are put between a pair of forming dies 10, 20 with optical function transfer surfaces 12, 22, wherein the glass preforms have the same total volume as an optical element 150 to be formed using the forming dies, are made of the same material as the optical element and are formed so that they separately touch the centers of the optical function transfer surfaces in pressing, and the glass preforms are heated and pressed to form an optical element. Since an enclosed space is not formed between each optical function transfer surface and each glass preform which is abutted on the center of the optical function transfer surface, the glass preforms are subjected to only one cycle of putting-transfer (heating, pressing)-cooling steps, thereby manpower saving in the forming process is attained while suppressing occurrence of a defective appearance, such as formation of an air reservoir.
