The surface 10a of the sand core is covered with a composite material 16 in which alumina fiber 12 is dispersed in the coating metal (pure Al) 14 whose melting point is lower than the temperature of molten metal of a base metal material (Mg alloy); the sand core is set in a casting mold; the molten metal of the base metal material is poured into the casting mold at a temperature lower than the melting point of the alumina fiber; and the cylinder block is cast. When the sand core is removed upon completion of the casting, the cylinder block 22 of which the wall of the water jacket is covered with the film 20 of the composite material is obtained.

By the incorporation of Cu the precipitation of gamma-phases moves onto the low-Al side, and, although the structure is inherently formed into a so-called lamellar structure where alpha2 phases (Ti3Al) and gamma-phases (TiAl) are alternately laminated into layer state, the gamma-phases are dispersed into network state and mixed into the lamellar structure and a so-called dual phase structure of the lamellar structure and the gamma-phases is formed, and further, Cu has a function of preferentially entering into solid solution in the gamma-phases and strengthening the gamma-phase itself. Thus, superior ductility at ordinary temp. and strength at ordinary temp. can be obtained.

摘要： PURPOSE:To manufacture an Al3Ti reinforced Al composite having homogeneity and high strength by preheating a TiO2 whisker green compact having a specified remaining amt. of K and contg. anatase crystals to a specified temp. and permeating the molten metal of Al or an Al alloy therein. CONSTITUTION:A material is subjected to depotassiumization treatment by an acid water soln. and is thereafter heat-treated to obtain TiO2 whiskers having 1 to 5wt.% remaining amt. of K and contg. anatase crystals. This TiO2 whiskers are subjected to compacting to form a green compact. This fibrous green compact 16 is preheated to 760 to 920 deg.C and is arranged in a mold 24 of a high pressure casting apparatus 22. Next, the molten metal 26 of pure Al or an Al alloy is fed thereto, and pressurizing is executed by a plunger 28 to permeate the molten metal 26 into the above green compact 16. The anatase crystals in the above whiskers are brought into reaction with Al in the molten metal 26 to form fine Al3Ti and Al2O3. In this way, the Al3Ti and Al2O3 are uniformly dispersed into the Al or Al alloy matrix with tight adhesion, by which the composite having high strength can be obtd.

Furthermore, the cost of the crystalline titania whiskers is low of about 1/15 to 1/10 to that of SiC whiskers having high capacity. The whiskers are not deteriorated by the molten metal of the matrix metal.
