SOLUTION: A glass preform producing method, wherein the glass preform to be an optical fiber is produced, is provided with a core formation step where a core of the glass preform is formed, and a clad formation step where a clad of the glass preform is formed around the core. The core formation step comprises a depositing step where a porous glass preform is formed by depositing fine glass particles on the periphery of a starting rod, and a sintering step where a GI type refractive index distribution, in which a refractive index continuously decreases with increase in a distance from the center of the core, is formed by sintering the porous glass preform in an atmosphere of a mixed gas containing a fluorine compound.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pure steam in which a flux of the steam is controlled in stable manner and a mixed impurity is not contained, without using a steam flux control mechanism. SOLUTION: In a wave guide 11 arranged with a magnetron 12 inside, a container 13 made from silica glass which is equipped with a porous medium 14 is arranged. And a water inlet pipe 15, a water outlet pipe 16, and a drainage pipe 17 are connected to the container 13. Pure water controlled by a flux control valve 18 to a predetermined flux is dropped on the upper surface of the porous medium 14, and permeates the inside promptly. When microwave is supplied in the wave guide 11 from the magnetron 12, the pure water currently held inside the porous medium 14 is heated by microwave heating and evaporated in an instant to come out from the surface to the exterior, and is carried to the outside through the steam outlet pipe 16. By controlling the amount of the flux of the pure water and the output power of the magnetron 12 appropriately, since all the supplied pure water serves as steam, the amount of the steam flux can be controlled by the flux control valve 18.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of coloring, cracking, etc., by annealing the bismuth germanate single crystal in a growth furnace right after growth before taking out the grown crystal at the time of growing the bismuth germanate single crystal by the Bridgman method. CONSTITUTION:Raw materials for production of the bismuth germanate consisting of germanium oxide and bismuth oxide are put into a crucible 2 which is then arranged in the vertical Bridgman furnace 1. The furnace 1 is then heated up by a heater 3 to melt the raw materials. A seed crystal is put from a seed pipe into the melt and after the temp. of the furnace is further elevated, the seed crystal is slowly lowered into the low-temp. region of the crucible 2, by which the molten raw material in the crucible 2 is single crystallized. The crucible 2 contg. the single crystalline is then moved into an annealing chamber 5 which has nearly the same shape as the shape of the growth chamber 4 of the furnace 1 and is maintained at a prescribed temp. The melt is annealed in this chamber, by which the bismuth germanate single crystal free from the coloring and cracking is obtd. This single crystal does not color and crack even after working.
