The air conditioner includes an indoor wall temperature detecting means 46 for detecting a temperature of the wall in the room and a defrosting means which, when it is determined that defrosting is required, selects either a heating cycle or a cooling cycle based on the indoor wall temperature detected with the indoor wall temperature detecting means 46, and controls the four-way valve 8 to perform the selected cycle for defrosting.
