The cloth 3 is placed on the laminated inorg. short fibers 4 to laminate the fibers 4 on the cloth 3 in the same way, and a fibrous laminate 8 consisting of the integrated fibers 1, 2, and 4 is obtained. The laminate 8 is roasted to form a composite fiber formed product 9 wherein the inorg. continuous fibers 1 are unidirectionally and regularly arranged in the formed product of the inorg. short fibers 4.     • PURPOSE:To obviate the dimensional change of a fiber-reinforced metal during use, by subjecting a fiber-reinforced metal in which light metals are used as base material to a treatment consisting of heating up to service temp. or above and holding. CONSTITUTION:The treatment consisting of heating to service temp. and holding is applied to the fiber-reinforced metal formed by using light metals as a base material and compounding a fiber reinforcement with the base material. Owing to this treatment, local metallographic changes of the fiber-reinforced metal can be completed before use (before finish working). The fiber-reinforced metal after the above treatment is practically free from dimensional change even if used at the prescribed temp. for a long period because dimensional change due to temp. rise during use is previously taken into account. Accordingly, dimensional accuracy of the parts and products of various structures made of this fiber-reinforced metal, such as piston, etc., can be maintained at a high level.
