Candidate acception judgement for accepting a category corresponding to the additional template as a candidate when a distance obtained by using the additional template is not more than a prescribed value and rejecting the category corresponding to the additional template when the distance is larger than the prescribed value is executed (S5) and a 1st threshold is set up (S6) as a function of the distance between the input character pattern and the reference template in each additional template, and when a value obtained by subtracting the number of misread input character patterns from the number of correctly read input character patterns after the registration of the additional template is not more than a prescribed value, the additional template is deleted (S7).
