摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify NOx in lean-burnt exhaust gas without having a bad effect on fuel consumption by setting a NOx adsorbent catalyst in an exhaust gas passage, adsorptively catching NOx by the oxidizing atmosphere of the lean exhaust gas to generate a reductive atmosphere, and regenerating the adsorbent catalyst. SOLUTION: A lean-burnable engine 99 is provided with an intake system having an airflow sensor 2 and a throttle valve 3, an exhaust system having an exhaust oxygen concentration sensor 19, an exhaust air temperature sensor 21 and a NOx adsorbent catalyst 18, and an engine control unit 25. The state where the quantity of the oxidizing agent is larger than the reducing agent is formed in the oxygen-reduction stoichiometric relation between each component in exhaust gas to chemically adsorb NOx on the NOx adsorbent catalyst 18. The state where the quantity of the reducing agent is equal to or larger than the oxidizing agent is formed, and the NOx adsorbed on the NOx adsorbent catalyst 18 is catalytically reacted with the reducing agent and made non- toxic. According to this, the toxic component in exhaust gas can be efficiently removed with a simple structure.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the consumption of a reducing agent by producing the condition where an oxidant is more than a reducing agent in the oxidation-reduction stoichiometric relation between the respective ingredients in exhaust gas to adsorb NOx on an adsorbing catalyst, and then producing the condition where the quantity of the reducing agent is equal to or more that of the oxidant so that NOx is reduced to N2 to be non-noxious. SOLUTION: During the operation of an engine 99 having an NOx adsorbing catalyst 18 for contact reducing NOx adsorbed to an oxidant in the same or larger quantity interposed in an exhaust purifying system, the engine operating condition and the state of the NOx adsorbing catalyst 18 are evaluated by an ECU 25 to determine the air fuel ration to control an injector 5. At this time, during the stoichiometric operation, NOx, HC and CO in exhaust gas are purified by a three-way catalytic function, and during lean operation, NOx is purified by an NOx adsorbing capability and HC and CO are purified by a burning function. Further, during lean operation, NOx purifying capability of the NOx adsorbing catalyst 18 is determined, and when deterioration is decided, the air fuel ratio is shifted to the rich side to recover the NOx adsorbing capability of the adsorbing catalyst.

SOLUTION: An exhaust gas cleaning apparatus is constituted of a cordierite honeycomb and a carrier layer which is obtained by coating a slurry added with activated carbon on the honeycomb mentioned above, drying and firing so as to form fine cavities (physical barrier) and supporting the catalytically active components. A method of producing the catalyst comprises adding activated carbon into an alumina slurry comprising γ-alumina, nitric acid, an alumina precursor, and purified water, then coating the slurry added with activated carbon on the cordierite honeycomb, drying and firing the coated layer, further impregnating a solution containing NOx-trapping components including Na and K as main components, firing, further impregnating a noble metal solution, e.g. a dinitrodiamine-Pt solution, a dinitrodiamine-Pd solution, or a rhodium nitrate solution and finally firing.

SOLUTION: In a NOx absorption catalyst 18 interposed in an exhaust emission control system, NOx, HC, and CO in exhaust gas are purified by a catalytic converter rhodium function at the time of stoichiometric operation, and NOx is purified by NOx absorption function at the time of a lean operation, and simultaneously, HC and CO are purified by a combustion function. At the time of a lean operation, it is judged that there is a NOx absorption function of the NOx absorption catalyst 18 or not. When it is judged that there is not an absorption function, an air-fuel ratio is rich-shifted for a predetennined period so as to regenerate the NOx absorption catalyst 18. The NOx absorption catalyst 18 including elements such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, strontium, and calcium as a part of component, is suitably used.

SOLUTION: During the operation of an engine, air required for combustion is led in via an air cleaner 1 and a throttle valve 5 and led into a cylinder after being mixed with gasoline injected from a fuel injection valve 13, in an intake pipe 8. This mixture is burnt by electric ignition to generate power. Exhaust gas produced by combustion is exhausted into the atmosphere via an exhaust pipe 19 and a catalyst 20, but in this case, an exhaust gas purifying catalyst 20 for purifying exhaust gas by catalyst action is provided in the exhaust pipe 19, and a heating unit 21 for heating exhaust gas is provided in the exhaust pipe 19 upstream of the catalyst 20. In case of exhaust gas temperature being lower than catalyst active temperature, exhaust gas is heated by the heating unit 21 to regenerate the catalyst 20.

When the adsorbing capacity is not be sufficiently recovered even through the recovering of the adsorbing capacity is tried by shifting the air fuel ratio to the rich side, because the catalyst is poisoned by SO2 contained in the exhaust gas, sulfate and/or sulfite is removed from the catalyst by passing the rich or stoichiametric gas to an exhaust gas passage.

An NOx adsorption catalyst is provided in the exhaust emission control system, NOx, HC and CO contained in exhaust gas are cleaned by its three way catalyst function during stoichiometric running and, during lean running, NOx is cleaned by an NOx adsorption ability and, simultaneously, HC and CO are also cleaned by an combustion function thereof. Further, by a determining and control signals from the ECU 25, the NOx cleaning ability of the NOx adsorption catalyst is always determined during lean running and, if the NOx cleaning ability is reduced, an air-fuel ratio or the like for combustion is shifted to a rich side and the NOx adsorption ability of the adsorption catalyst is recovered.

In this case, a multilayered metal is preferably interposed between the catalyst 3 and the prism 1 preferably to induce the SPP at each interface, and a kind of the multilayered metallic film and its thickness and a shape of the prism 1 and its material are optimized to the kind of the catalyst 3 and a change of a wavelength of an incident light.
