    • PURPOSE:To provide an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element having a high contrast ratio for displaying light and shade and not affected by the change of the threshold value voltage due to temperature. CONSTITUTION:The long axis direction of the liquid crystal molecule of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal cell arranged between a pair of polarizing plates arranged on a cross nicol is inclined at an nonzero angle against the polarization direction of the polarizing plate on the incidence side in the antiferroelectric state while no voltage is applied. When a triangular wave is applied, the permeability is largely changed in the range of the fixed inclination angle, the permeability becomes O in the uniform ferroelectric state when the negative electrode side voltage is applied, high permeability is obtained in the uniform ferroelectric state when the positive electrode side voltage is applied, and a high contrast ratio 200 or above is obtained. A liquid crystal display element is driven by the voltage sufficiently higher than the threshold value voltage, and it is not affected by the change of the threshold value voltage due to temperature.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent visuality from being deteriorated by working burrs so that their height from a film face is uniformed and sticking the reflecting face side peripheral edge part of a reflecting member fast to the peripheral edge part of a cell on the optical film sticking side while holding a gap between the reflecting face and a film face. CONSTITUTION:An optical film 2 is stuck to one outer surface of a liquid crystal cell 1 and the peripheral edge part of the film 2 is cut off from the normal direction of a film surface by a mechanical means to form burrs 3 projecting from the film surface on the cut part. Then, the burrs 3 are worked so that the height from the film surface is uniformed and the reflecting face side peripheral edge part of the reflecting member is stuck fast to the optical film sticking peripheral edge parts on both the sides of the cell 1 while holding the gap between the reflecting face and the film face by the burrs 3. Consequently, the generation of a troublesome phenomenon such as interference stripes and double display can be prevented and the invasion of uncured sealing agent into the gap between the optical film and the reflecting plate immediately after its application can be suppressed.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent a seal agent from penetrating a gap part between an optical film and a reflecting plate or a liquid crystal cell by cutting the optical film like a quarter-wave plate at a certain depth with a dumbbell having double blades to form burrs (projecting parts) having a uniform height. CONSTITUTION:A dumbbell 1 is equipped with two blades 2 and 2', and heated blades 2 and 2' are pressed to an optical film 4, which is adhered to a plate- shaped liquid crystal cell 3 with an adhesive 21, with a certain load P to form burrs (projecting parts) 5-8 having a uniform height (h) in the right and the left of blades. A reflecting plate 13 is laminated on the cut optical film 4 and the liquid crystal cell 3 and the reflecting plate 13 are stuck to each other to complete the lamination process. A seal part 14 is formed on the outside peripheral part of laminated reflecting plate 13, optical film 4, and plate-shaped liquid crystal cell 3. Thus, penetration of the sealing adhesive is prevented by the first, the second, or the third dam, and defective goods due to penetration of the seal agent over three dams are eliminated.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce considerably the formation of interference fringes and to improve visibility by curving a liquid crystal cell outward and superposing it upon a mirror, and applying an adhesive to the peripheral parts of the liquid crystal cell and mirror while a load is placed in such a direction that the both are clamped. CONSTITUTION:A GH type liquid crystal cell 1 which is manufactured by a normal method consists of a couple of glass plates 3 where GH type liquid crystal 2 is charged internally, and a transparent electrode and an orientation film (both not shown in figure) are formed inside those glass plates 3. Such GH type liquid crystal cell 1 is mounted on a surface plate, its curvature is checked by using a skimmer, and a cellulose-based quarter-wavelength phase difference plate 5 is stuck on the recessed part side of the curvature with an adhesive compound 4 by using a roller, etc. The surface of a glass plate 6, on the other hand, is coated with an Al film 7 forming a mirror surface by a vacuum film forming method to form a mirror 8. Then, the cell 1 is superposed on the mirror 8 with the quarter-wavelength phase difference plate 5 inside to obtain a mirror assay. Then, three assays are installed between press patterns 9 across plate type rubber 10 as an elastic member and clamped with bolts, thereby fixing the both with the adhesive.

    • PURPOSE:To apply uniform pressure and to improve the parallelism of the transparent substrate of a liquid crystal cell, i.e. uniformity of a cell gap by arranging projection streaks slantingly on a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:An ITO film 2 is formed on float plate glass 1 which is cleaned and dried sufficiently. The glass is dipped in a carboxylic acid chromium complex and dried to form an oriented film 3. Thus, two float glass plates 1 are formed and superposed one over the other with their ITO films 2 put opposite each other by scattering polystyrene beads over one plate and applying an epoxy resin adhesive 4 to the other by screen printing, thereby forming a liquid crystal cell. A silicone rubber sheet 5 is interposed between liquid crystal cells, semicircularly sectioned projections streaks 6 are formed slantingly on both surfaces, and they are arranged across the liquid crystal cells so that the projection streaks 6 cross one another. Nematic liquid crystal 7 having dielectric anisotropy is injected from a liquid crystal injection hole and polarizing plates 8 are stuck on both surfaces of a liquid crystal cell at right angles.
