CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R is methyl, R and R to R are H and R is acetyl: compound A), (R is ethyl, R and R are phthaloyl, R is benzyl, R is H and R is acetyl: compound B) or (R is ethyl, R and R are phthaloyl, R is benzyl, R is p-methoxyphenyl and R is acetyl: compound C) and the compound of formula II (Ac is acetyl; Bn is benzyl; Et is ethyl; MP is p-methoxyphenyl; Phth is phthaloyl) which is an intermediate for the above compounds. The compound C can be produced by glycosylating the compound of formula II with a compound obtained from pentaacetylmannose via two steps. The de-p-methoxyphenylation of the compound C gives the compound B, which is subjected to debenzylation, deacetylation, transesterification, dephthaloylation and N-acetylation to get the compound A.

    • PURPOSE:To enable commercially advantageous production of '-D-xyloside by allowing beta-xylosidase to act on a mixed solution containing a xylobiose or oligomeric xylose mixture, water and a compound of a general formula: R-OH. CONSTITUTION:The reaction system is composed of a mixture mainly composed of xylobiose or oligomeric xylose which is obtained by hydrolysis of hemi- cellulose from wood, water and 10 to 300 units/ml of beta-xylosidase originating from Aspergillus niger, and an alcohol of a general formula: R-OH where R corresponds to the R in the objective compound such as methanol or ethanol. They are allowed to react at 30 to 55 deg.C under stirring whereby beta-D-xylosides are obtained selectively in high yield. The products are subjected to a usual isolation and a purification such as column chromato-graphy, concentration, crystallization or the like to obtain the purified product. The process according to the present invention makes it possible to produce beta-D-xylosides from an economically advantageous raw materials.
