    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-size and low-priced high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of being restarted at a practically trouble-free level for requirements of instantaneous restart. SOLUTION: A lighting device 1 receives power supply from an AC power source AC to supply proper power to a high-pressure discharge lamp La and to effect stable lighting. A pulse generation means 2 generates a high voltage pulse Vp3 so that the high-pressure discharge lamp La is started by causing an electric breakdown. A peak value of the high voltage pulse Vp3 output from the pulse generation means 2 at the time of start is not more than a maximum value VpMAX of an electric breakdown voltage in the relationship between extinction time τand the electric breakdown voltage, and is not less than a second peak value VpMAX lower than the maximum value VpMAX, and is set to the electric breakdown voltage VpMIN or more when the high-pressure discharge lamp La is started after sufficiently long extinction time τ elapses. As a result, the peak value of the high voltage pulse Vp3 can be lowered to enable restart of a small-size and low-priced lighting device 1 at a practically trouble-free level for requirements of instantaneous restart.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which is designed into a small, inexpensive one while the higher harmonic components of input currents are low and the power factor is high. SOLUTION: A DC output obtained by rectifying and smoothing an ac power supply AC is stepped down by a step-down chopper circuit comprising a bridge circuit 2 for switching elements Q1 to Q4 , a first inductor L1 , and a load circuit 3, and is supplied to the discharge lamp La of the load circuit 3 to turn on the discharge lamp La using rectangular waves. Circuit nodes of the step-down chopper circuit where potential sways like high frequencies, i.e., the output end of the bridge circuit 2 and the ac power supply AC, are connected together via a second inductor L2 through connecting paths 51 , 52 which involve capacitors C51 , C52 . Input currents can be sampled via the connecting paths 51 , 52 over almost all the blocks of the source voltage of the ac power supply AC, so that a reduction in higher harmonic components and improvement in power factor can be achieved, and so that a smoothing capacitor C0 can be given stepping-up action by the second inductor L2 .

    • PURPOSE: To quickly stabilize the beam of light and perform protection relating to a discharge lamp in the end of its life, by lighting the lamp with tube power in accordance with lighting time in the initial period of starting, and lighting the lamp with power in accordance with tube voltage after lighting is stabilized. CONSTITUTION: In the first tube power target value generating circuit 11, voltage V13 is output to determine a tube power target value in accordance with a lighting time. In the second tube power target value generating circuit 12, a tube power target value is determined in accordance with tube voltage, to obtain output voltage V23 from a voltage detection value Vd . A lighting mode switching circuit 13, when a power supply is closed, holds a switch S in a contact (a) for a prescribed time, thereafter to changeover the switch S in a contact (b), and to selectively output an output V13 of the circuit 11 or an output V23 of the circuit 12 relating to a control signal generating circuit 14. In the circuit 14, the output V13 or V23 selectively obtained from the circuit 13 is input as target tube power Vm , on the other hand to output a control signal Vc so as to decrease a difference between Vm in proportion to target tube power and voltage Vm in proportion to actual tube power W from the voltage detection value Vd and from a current detection value Id.

    • PURPOSE: To maintain the discharge of a discharge lamp successively and to carry out a stable lighting, by bringing the discharge lamp close to the state before the polarity is reversed instantly, when the polarity of a rectangular wave is reversed, in a discharge lamp lighting device of a rectangular wave lighting method to control the lamp power according to the outputs of a lamp current detecting circuit and a lamp voltage detecting circuit. CONSTITUTION: In this device, there are provided with a lamp current maintaining circuit 51 furnishing a lamp current maintaining period to maintain the detecting output of a lamp current detecting circuit 5 at almost the immediately before the reversing when the polarity of a lamp current is reversed; and a lamp voltage maintaining circuit 61 furnishing a lamp voltage maintaining period to maintain the detecting output of a lamp voltage detecting circuit 6 at almost the immediately before the reversing when the polarity of the lamp voltage is reversed. The lamp voltage maintaining period is set at least longer than the lamp current maintaining period, and the lamp power is regulated by the maintaining outputs of both circuits.
