摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily detect abnormality in a sensor control system, without bringing complication in constitution. SOLUTION: A sensor element 10 is connected to a sensor control circuit 100, and the sensor control circuit 100 controls an impression voltage impressed to respective positive and negative terminals connected to a pair of electrodes of the sensor 10 and detects an element current flowing each time in response to a specified component concentration in accompaniment to the impression of the voltage. The sensor control circuit 100 measures also a variation of a current value accompanied when varying the sensor impression voltage alternating-current-likely. A micro-computer 200 calculates a resistance value of the sensor element, based on a ratio of the voltage variation to the current variation, and monitors the current value responding to the variation of the impressed voltage measured in the calculation of element resistance to detect the abnormality in the sensor control system, based on the monitored current value. The casing 101 has a gas inlet section 110 which constitutes the first to ninth vent holes 111 to 119 and prevents foreign substances from intruding inside the gas flow path 125 from the outside of the casing 101. The filter 140 is placed at a position which can be seen directly through the first to ninth vent holes 111 to 119 when seeing from the outside of the casing 101 in the direction of the thickness of the filter 140, with being spaced apart from the gas inlet section 110. A plurality of side holes 106a and at least one bottom hole 106b are bored on an element cover 103 for protecting the tip part of the sensor element 104, and hole diameters are adjusted to be ϕ0.5-1.5 mm respectively, and the side hole diameter/bottom hole diameter is adjusted to be 0.5-1.5, and flow velocity fluctuation in the element cover 103 is suppressed, and output pulsation of the sensor cell 150 and the monitor cell 160 is suppressed to stabilize NOx output. SOLUTION: This gas sensor element 1 is characterized in that it is provided with an oxygen pump cell 2 for adjusting oxygen concentration in an internal space 7 into which a measured gas is brought and a sensor cell 4 for detecting NOx concentration in the measured gas, and that an electrode 4a facing to the internal space 7 of the sensor cell 4 is a Rh-containing cermet electrode. The sensor element 1 is made such that the pump cell 2 and the sensor cell 4 are layered and baked, and then previous treatment is performed by passing a current through the sensor 4. Rh 2 O 3 produced in the electrode 4a facing to the internal space 7 of the sensor cell 4 in the baking process is reduced to metallic Rh. Only oxygen ion current due to the reduction/decomposition of NOx can be accurately detected since oxygen ion current due to the reduction/decomposition of Rh 2 O 3 is not added thereto when detecting the NOx concentration. Additionally, the heat-resistant support member 3 is positioned inside the atmosphere-side cover and is supported from the tip side of the gas sensor by an internal member supported by a housing. Alternatively, the heat-resistant support member is positioned in the atmosphere-side cover and is supported from the tip side of the gas sensor by the atmosphere-side cover.
