    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4,4,4-trifluorobutenoic acid useful as a production raw material or a synthetic intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals and functional materials such as fluorine-containing polymer.
      SOLUTION: 1-Chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene is reacted with carbon monoxide and water which is a nucleophilic reagent in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a base selected from (a) tertiary amine, (b) a nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic compound, (c) an imine-based base and (d) an inorganic base. It is especially preferable that the reaction is carried out in the presence of ethers separately used as solvents, because the yield is remarkably improved. As a result, 4,4,4-trifluorobutenoic acid can be produced in high selectivity by using inexpensive 1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene as a starting raw material.
