    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a gap formed between adjacent electrodes appears as a stripe on an image display and the three-dimensional performance of the display is deteriorated. SOLUTION: The spatial light modulator comprises: a first substrate 25; a second substrate 26; and a layer of electrooptic material disposed between both substrates. A first electrode arrangement 27 is disposed over the first substrate 25, and a second electrode arrangement 35 is disposed over the second substrate 26. The first electrode arrangement 27 comprises first and second electrode layers 28 and 29 disposed over the first substrate. At such a time, the spacing between the first electrode layer 28 and the first substrate 25 is different to the spacing between the second electrode layer 29 and the first substrate 25. The first electrode layer 28 and the second electrode arrangement 35 are configured so as to co-operate, in use, to define a first set of addressable regions, and the second electrode layer 29 and the second electrode arrangement 35 are configured so as to co-operate, in use, to define a second set of addressable regions.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent rough display or display irregularity due to unstable boundaries of liquid crystal domains in a liquid crystal display apparatus with a multi-domain in-plane switching system which suppresses coloring due to changes in viewing angles. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display apparatus with a multi-domain in-plane switching system includes a plurality of sub regions 1, 2 having bend portions as boundaries, wherein a liquid crystal driving electrode comprising a pixel electrode 71 and a common electrode 72 gives the bend portion as bent into a twofold V-shape composed of an outer V-shape and an inner V-shape inwardly extended from the outer V-shape. In particular, an angle between the extending direction of the liquid crystal driving electrodes (71, 72) and the initial alignment direction of the liquid crystal is larger near the boundaries of the sub regions 1, 2 than in other regions.
