    • PURPOSE: To obtain inexpensively coke for isotropic carbon materia l, which has fine optical anisotropic tissue, by adding a high-molecular material contg. hydroxyl groups to a bituminous substance such as coal tar pitch, oxidizing the mixture and carbonizing the oxidized product.
      CONSTITUTION: 10W50wt% high-molecular material contg. hydroxyl groups such as still residue pitch of phenols or phenolic resin is added to a bituminous substance such as coal tar pitch or petroleum asphalt. The mixture is molten by heating it at 200W400°C, and oxidized, e.g., by introducing an oxidizing gas (e.g. air). The oxidized mixture is carbonizedd at 550W600°C in an inert atmosphere to obtain the desired coke for isotropic material. The resulting coke is crushed and mixed with a binder. The mixture is briqutted, fired and graphitized to obtain an isotropic high-density graphite material.

    • PURPOSE: To increase the bulk density and improve the strength of an artificial graphite electrode prepared from a coal tar-based needle coke, by carrying out the graphitization in the presence of a specific antipuffing agent.
      CONSTITUTION: Metallic nickel, nicket compound (e.g. nicket oxide), metallic cobalt and/or cobalt compound (e.g. cobalt oxide) is used as the antipuffing agent of the present invention. The agent preferably contains ≤25wt% particles having diameter of ≤2.4μ and has an average particle diameter of ≤1.8μ. In the production of a graphite electrode, the above antipuffing agent is added to a coal tar-based needle coke (sulfur content: about 0.05W0.3%, nitrogen content: about 0.3W0.6%). The amount of the agent is about 0.1W1wt% based on the sum of the coke and a binder. The mixture is subjected successively to the forming, primary calcination, impregnation, secondary calcination, and graphitization to obtain the objective artificial graphite electrode.
