    • PURPOSE:To improve fuel consumption and durability and reduce engagement sound for a vehicle by preventing a secondary speed change part from shifting to non-directly-coupled state and allowing it to stay in the directly-coupled state to achieve a target speed change stage upon down shifting. CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission 2 comprises a torque converter 111, a secondary speed change part 112, and a primary speed change part 113. In the secondary speed change part 112, an intermediate shaft rotates at the same speed as an input shaft 130 while a clutch C0 or a one way clutch F0 is engaged. In addition, a ring gear 134 acceleratedly rotates against the input shaft 130 while a brake B0 is engaged to stop the rotation of a gear 133. As a result, the secondary speed change part can be switched between directly- coupled and non-directly-coupled states. The primary speed change part 113 includes three sets of mechanisms 140, 150, 160 which allow a plurality of speed change stages. When used for down shifting, this speed control gear prevents the secondary speed control part from shifting to non-directly-coupled state and allowing it to stay in the directly-coupled state. Therefore, the absence of relative rotation of each gear in the secondary speed control part serves to improve the transmission efficiency.
