摘要： PURPOSE:To provide a ship propulsion unit where a lower case is able to get high propulsive efficiency in holding down any drag to be received from water to smallness in the range of a specified tilt angle. CONSTITUTION:In this ship propulsion unit, transmitting engine driving force to a propeller via a power transmission mechanism housed in a shell part 2a and rotating and driving this propeller, while varying an inflow angle of water to the shell part 2a attending on a tilt operation centered with a tilt shaft, sectional from in front of a shell part 2a along the inflow direction of water is made up so as to maintain a nearly streamline shape within the range of variations in an inflow angle of water. Since the sectional from of the front of the shell part 2a of a lower case 2 is kept in the nearly streamline shape within the variation range of the inflow angle of water to the shell part 2a, this water flows along the shell part 2a without any resistance, therefore any drag from water, the lower case 2 receives, is held down to smallness, whereby yet higher propulsive efficiency is secured to this ship propulsion unit.

CONSTITUTION: A marine drive has a vertical X-dimension 254 defined by a vertical distance between a rotational shaft of an engine driving shaft 32 on a transom 16 and a plane surface 256 of a bottom 190 of a boat 18. The marine drive has a shaft-spacing dimension 258 defined as a vertical distance between a horizontal center line of an upper horizontal bore which is a rotational axis 260 of an upper input shaft 28 and a horizontal centerline of a lower horizontal bore which is a rotational axis 262 of a coaxial counter-rotating propeller shafts 156 and 158. When the propeller shafts 156, 158 are parallel with the plane surface 256, the marine drive has a surfacing dimension 264 defined by a vertical distance between a bottom of a torpedo 180 and the plane surface 256. The marine drive has the vertical X-dimension in the range of about 13 inches to 19 inches in combination with the shaft-spacing dimension 258 in the range of about 8 inches to 15 inches in combination with the surfacing dimension of 0 and more.

CONSTITUTION:A propeller machine 18 is vertically and laterally turnably mounted to a transom 12 of a ship body 10. A propeller driving mecahnism consisting of a gear mechanism 40 is provided to the inside of a bottom casing 36 of the propeller machine 18. A front edge of the casing 36 is constituted by an elastic material 38 of rubber or the like. In this way, even if driftwood or the like moved along a ship bottom collides against the propeller machine 18, the driving mechanism is never damaged.

CONSTITUTION: A skeg 194 includes a leading edge 288 in a stem side extending downwardly from a torpedo portion 188 of a housing and having an upper end 302 and a lower end 304; and a trailing edge 306 in a stern side having an upper end 308 and a lower end 310. The upper end 302 of the leading edge 288 is spaced forwardly of the lower end 310 of the trailing edge 306 by a horizontal distance grater than the horizontal length of the torpedo portion 188. The upper end 302 of the leading edge 288 is provided on the leading edge 278 in the stem side of the torpedo portion 188. The lower end 310 of the trailing edge 306 is provided in a rear side of an end 312 in the stern side of the torpedo portion 188.
